How practice works

  1. Meet a few new symbols, hear them, watch the stroke-order animation, then trace them.

  2. Build syllables from parts, split longer words into syllables, then sort consonants by class.

  3. Use consonant class, syllable type and tone marks to work out the tone.

5 modules, 75 lessons

The course stays focused on reading Thai script: 28 consonants, 17 vowel signs and combinations, 4 tone marks, plus the rules for sounding out syllables and working out their tones.

  1. Learn 5 consonants and 3 long vowels. By the end of the module, you can sound out มา, นา, มี and งู using the symbols you have learned.

  2. Learn the remaining Low Class 1 consonants and long vowels, add final consonants, then move to Low Class 2 and live vs. dead syllables.

  3. Add 7 mid-class consonants and short vowels, then use them in new syllable combinations.

  4. Learn 7 high-class consonants and 7 combinations with silent leading ห, which changes how tone rules apply.

  5. Hear the five tone contours, place the 4 tone marks, and use consonant class, syllable type and tone rules to work out the tone.
